Legal Investigations
NAC understands that many appeals and post-conviction cases need thorough legal investigations, involving actions like obtaining evidence through Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) Requests, issuing subpoenas, conducting background checks, and locating/interviewing witnesses. However, being in prison limits your ability to perform these tasks independently. To help those in such situations, NAC provides legal investigation services for specific fees. To request a FOIA-based investigation, specify the information and government agency. For a subpoena, specify the material and the possessor. Background checks require details like legal name, date of birth, race, gender, and possible location. If you want us to locate and interview a witness, provide their details and specify the topics. Inform us if the witness is expected to cooperate or be hostile.

NAC recognizes that many appeals and post-conviction proceedings involve crucial legal investigations, such as obtaining evidence through Freedom of Information Act ("FOIA") Requests, subpoenaing records, conducting background checks on witnesses, and locating/interviewing witnesses. However, the harsh reality is that being confined in prison prevents individuals from personally pursuing evidence through FOIA requests or subpoenas, conducting background checks, and locating/interviewing witnesses. To aid those unable to undertake these tasks independently, NAC provides legal investigation services in the following areas, with specified fees:
- $250.00 for submitting a FOIA request (additional costs will be communicated if the entity we submit the request to charges more than $50.00 for searching, copying, and providing the information, and you will be responsible for covering these expenses).
- $500.00 for preparing a subpoena.
- $250.00 per person for running a background check.
- $1,000.00 for each witness to be located and interviewed (price may vary based on the complexity of the work).
For a FOIA Request, specify the information sought and the government/state agency believed to possess it. For a subpoena, specify the material to be subpoenaed and identify the possessor.
To request a background check on an individual, provide their legal name (first, middle - if applicable and known - and last), date of birth (or approximate age), race, gender, and the city and state where they are believed to reside.
To have us locate and interview a witness(es), provide their legal name (or known name), phone number (if known), address (if known), social media name (mention the platform), race, gender, and specific questions you want us to ask. It's crucial to inform us if the witness is expected to cooperate openly or if hostility is anticipated.
